vegout time - st kilda

As previously mentioned I was on a training course in St Kilda for a few days spread over a couple of weeks. New locations means NEW FOOD and I got to nom at VegOut time a few times. Simple curries in bain maries (but so full of flavour they almost bowl you over) and dishes ala carte all absurdly cheap. Pictured is the lentil dahl and red curry pumpkin served with rice. This was one of those meals that you wake up thinking about. I'm salivating right now SO GOOD. Sometimes you avoid places like VegOut time because of the 'old days' horror but trust me this is gold.

cupcake workshop - cupcake central

Leilani looking like a pro!

Lonan and Leilani decorating

Macy getting some help from Sheryl whoops I've got Lonan in there twice!
Sheryl from Cupcake Central invited me last Thursday to her Christmas cupcake decorating workshop. Being mainly for kids I rustled up my friend Tahn and her beautiful 3 vegan kids Leilani, Lonan and Macy. We had a ball all afternoon with Cupcake Centrals gluten free vegan cupcakes. The amount of decorations that are available are minimal but nevertheless the kids enjoyed it immensely.
I have to say this made me so happy. It's how I see the future where all people are accommodated for and it's no.big.deal. Especially kids, to have an all inclusive kids event is so important to the normalisation of diet. Lets face it, many kids have so many allergies these days so to have an event where they can all sit down and share food is awesome. Kudos to Sheryl and Cupcake Central (the cupcakes are delicious as I've already posted). You can have private cupcake decorating parties for kids and adults, if I had kids this would be my preference!
Thanks to Sheryl for inviting me along. I get invited to so many events and this is the first one I've been interested in and it's been completely applicable. I'm passionate about what Sheryl is doing and I can't wait until EVERYONE is offering gluten free and vegan options.
deets: cupcake central - cupcake workshops are advertised on their blog or available for private groups anytime
$$: workshops open to the public are $25 per child take home 4 cupcakes
For transparency: Cupcake Central invited us without charge

monday melbourne roundup
A joyful week for me I got to knock off number 3 on my bucket list which was DOLLY PARTON (#1 is bowie #2 is daniel smith). But before that lets talk about the food. Started off with the final day of my project management course at AIM, one more lunch at VegOut Time a fine start to the week. I also had some pre Dolly dinner at Yamato (Corrs Lane) and found the food not as good as the Russell st one so ... take your pick (but perhaps they were just having a mediocre day). However THE WAITER SPOKE JAPANESE it was so exciting.
I got invited to a Christmas cupcake decorating event at Cupcake Central. I brought along my friend Tahn and her 3 kids and we had heaps of fun decorating 4 gluten free vegan cupcakes. I will be doing a post on this later in the week. Sheryl at Cupcake Central is just the sweetest lady ever (no pun intended ha!)
Finally, I hit the regulars of Miss Marmalade and Wide Open Road for some coffee hits.
I have my last exam on Wednesday then SEE YA SUCKAS school (thank God it's super late this year). I finish work on the 22nd of December till the 10th of January and I'm going to do ZERO. I don't think I will even be blogging. Really really need a proper break after a crazy year.
Thanks to everyone who came to class yesterday I had a ball. I'm so happy I'm getting better and more relaxed at teaching this class I enjoy so much teaching and talking with everyone. Thank you!

wood spoon - collingwood

agedashi tofu

dengaku don

pumpkin dumplings in coconut cream
On a rainy night where bickering back and forth as to where to eat lead us to places that were closed we became glad parameters were set for us. We were on Smith st, hungry, a little damp and slightly cranky. Although I think Wabi Sabis food is great I also think it's too expensive. So we went to Wood Spoon Kitchen after recommendations from quite a few people but namely my foodie vego twins Cindy and Michael. Wood Spoon Kitchen was actually only slightly cheaper but the food lacked the same quality.
The agedashi tofu was delicious, all those things you want crispy, salty and creamy. My dengaku don wasn't great, the nasu dengaku sauce I'm used to is a lot more flavourful, this was limp and brown is the only word I can think for it. The vegies were all a little too mushy and so was the rice. My dessert of sweet pumpkin dumplings in coconut cream was delicious though and saved the meal.
Wood Spoon get lots of points for having a well labelled menu (vegan/vegetarian) and the restaurant is great, spacious with super friendly staff. I would definitely go back and try a few different things but for value for money and consistent quality I would keep going back to Yamato.

monday melbourne roundup - the tuesday edition
kidlets, I am SO excited. I finish school NEXT WEEK *breathes into paper bag* let us not think of the project management assignment I have due in by February because SUMMA IZ HEAR!
Last week saw me southside at a project management course. It's always so great to explore somewhere you don't go very often, Fitzroy st has some serious food cred. I nommed on sourdough rolls from Baker di Chirico, licked the window of Golden Fields, had some seriously amazing curries at VegOut Time and had some fabulous coffee at St Kilda Snack Bar. Biggest thing I noticed was coffee is WAY cheaper southside, like 50c-75c sounds like so little but it makes a huge difference especially if its 25% of the price.
Low and behold I spent MOAR time southside, I got tattooed on Saturday and attempted to go to Red Stitch on Sunday (stuffed up the times BOO) but went to Borsch, Vodka and Tears both times (second best avo on toast in Melbourne - the first being Stephanie Alexanders). Pran I can also recommend Dukes for really rad coffee and friendly service.
Friday night I went to Ponyfish Island for a quick drink it was just when the huge thunder storm was rolling through and it was an AWESOME place to watch it. After that I went to the AGM for Friends of the ABC, Friends of the ABC are an ABC watchdog/lobby group who do really great work. The ABC is the last avenue of ad free media in this country and it's of crucial importance we maintain its integrity and production in house. To check out what Friends of the ABC do and BECOME A MEMBER check out their website. Christine Nixon was the main speaker and she did a fascinating talk abut her opinions and relationship with the media. I got to ask her a couple of questions, it was very very cool and interesting.
I also hit the usuals Lord of the Fries (vegan POTATO AND GRAVY), Purple Peanuts and Miss Marmalade.
As for outs, there is only one proper
out.
the fellatio monologues
Long story how I ended up there but suffice to say I went with very VERY low expectations. It was actually a scripted, performed play as opposed to the vagina monologues. I have to say I didnt mind it.. which would mean that a lot of people might actually *like* it. It's difficult to review it without all sorts of unintended innuendo but it was entertaining and only mildly offensive(and that's me being the offensive police - Dave thought I was being too sensitive). It actually had a bit of heart and I saw what it was trying to say/ground it was trying to cover but it was a tad clumsy, I have faith in the maturation of the material. Anyway it's run has finished now but the biggest revelation was the SPACE. Revolt in Kensington is CRAZY. A huge warehouse all decked out with a couple of theatres and an art gallery space. Me wanty, WANT WANT WANT.

veggie kitchen - northcote

"chicken" satay skewers

ah gei - stuffed tofu pocket

bean curd roll

bbq pork bun

vegie cutlet
With the wealth of vego places in Melbourne it's easy to over look many/keep going back to some. Veggie Kitchen has been on my radar for some time but being in Northcote I couldn't really be bothered (yes I'm lazy). Anywhoo I'm making it my mission to get along to ALL the pure veg places in Melb. Add a friend with the same inclination (also with car) and here is the beginning of the series Miss Fatty Pacman Systematically Eats Melbourne.
I was a bit.. urgh another fake meat-a-thon but Veggie Kitchen takes it to the next level. Firstly most of their fake meat is soy based (no gluten baby for me) and secondly they make their own soy milk and tofu. Fresh soy milk and tofu, as you can imagine, is unbelievably good. The service is friendly and attentive, the food is brought out quickly. I loved most but was neutral on a couple of dishes. The buns were particularly amazing. We also had pearl rice balls (not pictured) and we even had a special vegan dessert made for us - red bean pancakes with soy ice cream (no picture - my camera died).
When we set out to order I thought by gee! that banquet looks like so much food lets pace ourselves and get ala carte. We ended up eating as much food as the banquet (priced at $30 - we spent $30 coincidentally). The serves are smaller than you think but perhaps I've always been so full of gluten in other places that my estimation is off. In any event $30 for the banquet is a steal and I would suggest getting that if you go. Or mix it up, you know how you do.
Free hot water top ups for your tea, a bustling busy space on Friday night and it was super awesome. I always like somewhere that deals well with my booming laugh and exaggerated gesticulation. Veggie Kitchen is a winner! Go.

pastizzis

I finally rolled of my butt to make the staple Maltese food PASTIZZIS! I was *supposed* to make them for a Byzantine themed bbq on Saturday but after Boozy McFalldown went on the rampage it kind of blew my day out (not kind of - entirely). BUT! I had all the ingredients and once my raging hang over had misted slightly I was craving GREASE. That's how easy these are to make, I made them so revoltingly hung over I could barely stand.
You have to trust me sans cross section that both kinds are in there but I made the traditional curried pea and spinach/ricotta. There's only 3 in that plate for a few reasons:
1. I ate almost everything that came withing reach
2. I found it difficult to get the hang of folding them, these were the final 3 that looked ok
ingredients
1 package of defrosted puff pastry (Borgs brand for authenticity)
curried pea filling (recipe from Taste.com.au)
yields 8 large pastizzis
175g dried green split peas
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small brown onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
3 teaspoons mild curry powder
1/2 tsp of salt
1. Rinse peas, pick out any wonky looking ones and cover with cold water in a saucepan. Bring to the boil over high heat then reduce to simmer uncovered, for 30 minutes or until tender. I found I had to top up the water a couple of times so keep an eye on it.
2. In a bit of oil fry up onion and garlic until softened then add curry powder. Combine well then add the peas and 1/4 cup cold water. Cook on medium heat until liquid has evaporated. At this point it just looks like a bunch of split peas and onion, when they cook in the pastry they soften down to that puree you're familiar with.
spinach ricotta filling (recipe from The Voluptuous Vegan)
yields 8 large pastizzis
300 gm of tofu (silken)
1 tbsp of olive oil
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp of light miso paste
handful of steamed spinach (or I used 1/4 block of frozen)
1. Whizz the mixture in a food processor. Voila. (I actually mashed with a spoon)
assemble
1. Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan-forced).
2. Cut frozen pastry sheet into 4 squares. Blob about a tablespoon of your mixture in the middle, you'll learn how much is enough quite quickly. I then pinched the ends (pointy part of pastizzi) and then sealed it by rolling over the pastry on top of each other at the seam. You'll get the hang of it. Spray with a bit of cooking oil or brush with soy milk.
3. Bake for 20/25 minutes until golden.
notes: I'm still having the water release issues from the tofu ricotta (probably because I did nothing to try and change it this time) I still think if you cook the tofu mixture in a saucepan until it releases all that water and drain it off that will fix it. Will keep you updated, till then either try that method or have soggy bottomed tofu ricotta pastizzis.

monday melbourne roundup
Well last week felt busy but in reality I didn't go out that much. I have my major assignment for Business Analysis due this week (presentation a week early so I can go to D O L L Y), I'm on a project management course this week and I have my database design assignment due the week after. So all in all I've been stressing. And what happens when I've been stressing? I be drinking. Friday night got maggotron at Grouse but had so.much.fun. until I crashed my bike on the way home and dropped my phone in the toilet *face palm* anyway I herald the arrival of spring by my first bender so hello to the warmer weather. Bring on the end of school.
Last week saw me flutter around Acustico (great new cafe in my hood) and a couple of trips Purple Peanuts (cant get enough of that rice salad).
out.
grouse
As mentioned I went nuts at the queer disco. It's at the end of my street so there was NO EXCUSE not to go. So many of my friends turned up it ended up being like queer Cheers. Super old friends too, it's so nice (and smart) that almost all of my friends from Sydney live here now (and by here I mean Brunswick also). Fab. I havent been to Grouse in years... keen to start up again! (perhaps sans crawing around on table tops and trying to pash straight men).
clairy brown and the bangin rackettes
These chickos (and fab guys) are amazing. So freaking hot, the cd launch was epic HOWEVER to all the rockabilliy skanks who just turned up to stand around look skanky and TALK CONSTANTLY ALL NIGHT without ever paying attention to a single band, you suck.

raw vanilla chocolate torte

The dessert from my raw dinner party. This torte had many sauces and many steps and by the end I couldn't be bothered! So I just whipped some coconut cream and left it at delicious that.
ingredients
yield 1 9 inch pie
the crust
1 1/2 cup pecans
3/4 cup raisins, roughly chopped
2 tbsp coconut oil/butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch salt
chocolate filling
2 cups raw cashews
1 cup water
2 cup cacao powder (I used cocoa powder)
1 1/2 cup cacao butter, grated
2 tbsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup agave nectar (I used diluted maple syrup)
1⁄2 tbsp lemon juice
coconut cream
1 400gm can of coconut cream (no name brands tend to have the most "cream")
dash of vanilla
method
1. Refrigerate the can of coconut cream for as long as you can (at least a few hours). Open up and scrape the coconut fat from the lid and scoop as much fat from the top of the can as possible. Whip the fat and get it as smooth as possible, adding the vanilla and a couple of tablespoons of the coconut milky water to thin it out. Whip it for a few minutes until light and fluffy and chill while you are making the pie.
2. Make the crust by pulsing all the ingredients until it resembles a crumb. Press into the base of your pan.
3. Make the filling (I melted/softened the cocoa butter in the sun - you could soften over some warm water) by blending the cashews, water, vanilla, agave nectar and lemon juice until smooth.
4. Add the cacao butter and cacao powder and blend to combine.
5. Smooth the chocolate mixture into the pie base and refrigerate to set for at least 2 hours. Serve with a dollop of coconut cream.

monday melbourne roundup
I had a relaxing week last week, I only worked 2.5 days. It's just so nice to have a big sleep then get into your day. Don't get me wrong I still worked my arse off but took my time and didn't rush between things. I also didn't go to school last week so life was peachy. I've got 3 weeks left (argh) and then I'm free for the summer, can't friggen wait!
I planted my summer garden of herbs and vegies (all in terracotta pots on the balcony) I'm excited to see how they turn out. Still nesting like crazy, getting things framed, finally sending things to people I've had horded for years. I also visited the Vegie Bar, Miss Marmalade, Degraves Espresso Bar, Purple Peanuts, Movida Next Door.
out.

So kudos to MTC for putting a new play, by a woman on the main stage. But boo for the women in your plays always being crazy.

All in all it was a fun day I bought some Ayurveda beauty products and some childrens books and toys for my nephew. I was very glad to crawl onto the couch later that night. Till next year!

yamato - melbourne

tofu salad

nasu dengaku
Yamato is one of those places. It's the first hidden laneway gem I found when I moved to Melbourne. Dating someone who is 6ft4 at the time it amused me to no end to see him contort himself into the tiny Japanese booths, legs sprawled into two other tables. Yamato is teeny tiny and super kawaii you feel like you're in Japan - just don't try and speak mangled high school Japanese to the staff they burst the fantasy by telling you they are not Japanese.
Having just arrived from Sydney I was feral for Asian food. Sydney has one of the best Asian dining scenes in the world and it's salty, fiery food lined my belly from childhood. With the multitude of everything Melbourne does amazingly, good Thai and Japanese is surprisingly hard to come by (and then when you do find it much more expensive than I'm used to). Yamato is delicious, simple, traditional all the things I love. It's not Kuni's outstanding but it does a lot of things well, scratches an itch and is half the price. It's worth it for the venue alone.
Yamato has another restaurant on Russell st now but I beg you to go to the Corrs Lane one (and have a post sake guzzling cocktail at Berlin Bar after). Do you have any Japanese tips for me chookies?

tomato and macadami mozzarella pasta

Another winner from the Raw Chef - Russell James' free e-book. I really loved this dish, it was quite light (I find a lot of raw dishes to be heavy) and was really easy to prepare. I'm still getting the hang of my mandoline so my 'linguine' was thicker and harder to handle but it still tasted delicious and even better the next day. The kicker? I have found a way to eat parsnip that I LOVE!
ingredients
yields 4 dishes
linguine
4 medium carrots, peeled
4 medium parsnips, peeled
1/2 tbsp salt
15 large basil leaves, sliced thinly
2 tbsp dried italian seasoning
2c baby plum tomatoes, cut into small sections
macadamia mozzarella
3/4 cup macadamias
3/4 cup cashews
1 tbsp tamari
2 tsp lemon juice
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
capsicum sauce
1/2 cup pine nuts
1 capsicum
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp tamari
1 tbsp agave (I used maple syrup)
method
1. Slice the carrot and parsnip thinly on a mandoline (or make spaghetti on a spiraler). With the thin strips slice them vertically to make linguine. Combine linguine with salt and let stand whilst you make the mozzarella.
2. Combine mozzarella ingredients in a food processor and blend until creamy. Add extra water if needed to help blend, the mozz should still be thick.
3. Combine all the capsicum sauce ingredients in a food processor until liquified. Add extra water if needed to get a sauce consistency.
4. Rinse the linguine and dry in paper towel or a salad spinner. The linguine should be softer and appear 'cooked'. Toss with the remaining linguine ingredients.
5. Mix in the mozz with the linguine until well combined.
6. Serve with the capsicum sauce drizzled over the stack.
